Students for Students is a fund raising project borne out of a desire to foster children's learning and cultural understanding through the act of helping peers in a developing country.
Via iEARN (International Educational and Resource Network), “the largest global network that enables youth to use technology to collaborate on projects to enhance learning and make a difference in the world,” Deanne McBeath, a technology teacher at Village Charter School in Trenton, has been working with David Ngare of Igwamiti Primary School in Nyahururu, Kenya. His e-mails to her have revealed the many adversities that Mr. Ngare confronts teaching in a nation beset by poverty, disease, and civil unrest.
Ann Osborne of Lambertville, New Jersey, a friend of Ms. McBeath traveled to Kenya in the early 1980's. Not only was she struck by the beauty of the country, but also by the poverty and substandard living conditions of many of its residents, hoping one day to return in a capacity of helping those in need.
Upon hearing of Mr. Ngare's struggles, much of it rooted in lack of funds, Ms. Osborne saw an opportunity not only to provide support, but also to help educate her two children, ages 13 and 14, about Kenya as a whole, the challenges faced by children in third-world countries, and, most importantly, how they can make a difference in improving the lives of such children.
Education is empowerment, and thus, we have initiated this fund raising campaign to benefit the students of Igwamiti Primary School with the goal of providing children involved on both sides of the globe with the foundation to become successful, productive, and caring adults.
This is an entirely volunteer effort. One hundred percent of the money raised will go directly to the school – no administrative costs or overhead fees will be deducted.
